Future Food Sustainability Can Be Traced Back into Local People’s Socio-Cultural Roots in Uttarakhand Himalaya, India

Sustainable food system ensures adequate and safe supply in an eco-friendly manner. We assessed sustainability perception practices of local community through structured interviews sub-alpine settlements Uttarakhand Himalaya. Major perceived challenges towards were identified using Rank-Based Quotient analysis. Association with various socio-demographic factors (e.g., age, gender, education, socio-economy, socio-culture) was tested. An overall neutral (mean score 2.9) moderately sustainable 3.1) observed. Respondents higher socio-cultural showed more sourcing positive social economic perception, as well participatory willingness. Female respondents dependent on sources than the males. Education level influenced quality choice. People production cost major constraint; while small landholdings labor migration main challenges. Land water management issues climate uncertainty environmental constraints. Socio-cultural exposure played significant role ranking these encourage direct involvement socio-culturally active people conducting extensive outreach programs for future vulnerable Himalayan valleys.
